Eastern Europe. iHebrew Hebrew – the traditional language of Judaism, the state language of Israel. and iYiddish Yiddish – beginning with the 10th century, the language of Ashkenazi, the eastern European Jews, spoken by about 11 million Jews all over the world at the beginning of the 20th century., two languages and one people, Hebrew is the sacred language of the Torah, Yiddish is the secular language of the galut, the language of the Jewish diaspora uprooted from its homeland. “God speaks Yiddish on weekdays and Hebrew on Sabbath”….

The Talmud Torah school, or heder, – all the boys have to attend an elementary school, each man should be able to pray and read the Torah in the language of the Creator. Studying takes place in one of the rooms of the melamed, the heder teacher. Beginning with three years of age, boys study the alphabet and read texts in Hebrew without translation; beginning with five years of age, they read the Torah and the Talmud. From early morning to evening….

“He who does not know Hebrew is not educated, he who does not know Yiddish is not a Jew”….
